Delphic

Solo Exhibition

Hannah Nowlan

Yeah, Nice - Byron Bay, NSW

APRIL / MAY 2022

'Delphic' illustrates the shifting nature of our climate as a mode of connection, conversation and restorative healing. Kelp figures, oceanic fields and deep shadows move through these paintings. Creating imagery that is familiar yet obscure, illustrative yet abstract.

  • In the lead-up to this exhibition, I've researched ancient alchemical drawings and manuscripts. I resonate with the depiction of esoteric imagery, earth symbolism and ambiguous portrayals of landscape found within these illustrations. Natural philosophy at this time was held with great power and significance. I'm always fascinated by the history of recording and our relationship with natural sciences today. It's poignant to see that these images, symbols and recurring figures are still relevant to our current narratives, even after eras of time.

There is no separating that my exhibition arrives when a region is so presently and deeply impacted by natural disasters. But as an artist, it's impossible not to look for undercurrents of hope and draw light to art's critical role in times of loss and despair. It also feels timely to begin deepening our understanding of nature and our individual abilities to make impactful change.

Reflecting on my own mode of storytelling, painting for me is an essential tool in tracing, processing and moving through moments in time. The consistency of my practice has afforded me the ability to paint through emotional states of darkness and pain. Recording the dark moments with the same reverence as the light.

Created over the past few months, 'Delphic' has become an illustration of these unsettling times as a mode of connection, conversation and restorative healing. Representative of the shifting nature of our climate, each painting depicts a kelp figure moving through a visceral flow of water. As fluid as their watery grounds, each figure seems only to exist momentarily, in a temporal state of being. Offering a parallel to meditation where one's thoughts rise and fall, similarly to the ebb and flow of the ocean's tide. Kelp figures, oceanic fields and deep shadows move through these paintings. Creating imagery that is familiar yet obscure, illustrative yet abstract.
